Ever wonder if the electric car uses the same outlet as your cellphone?

Well it can! An EV (electric vehicle) can use a standard 120-volt outlet to charge your car and if you aren’t in a hurry, the convenience of finding a plug anywhere can be great. An EV can be charged between 10-18 hours using a 120-volt outlet, depending on the EV. But if you are looking for a faster way to charge your car at home, a 240-volt outlet may be the way to go! They can charge an EV in 3-6 hours.  Just remember, before you plug your car into just any outlet, make sure the outlet is on its own appropriate circuit.  Not sure about the circuit? Starting your day with a fully charged battery is like starting the day with a full tank of gas! Without the same cost! The average gas price is $3.65 a gallon and the average gallon of electricity in an EV is only $1.14! What a difference! But does the electric gallon get the same mileage as a gas gallon? Well, just like with a gas car that really depends on the driver and driving conditions but most EV can get between 68 and 99 mpg. And based on the average EV battery,  that means you can drive between 100-200 miles before needing a recharge.

So what happens if you are out and about and realize you need to recharge? Just find a charging station and plug in! A charging station can charge your car in about 30 minutes by using 480-volt outlets. This can be great if you are in a hurry to get a charge and especially if you forgot to plug your car in last night! Charging stations are not that hard to find either. If you aren’t sure where the closest one is you can check out PlugShare to find the nearest one.
